Road Trippin Pt. 6: Santa Cruz

The drive wasn’t too bad from SD (about 9 hours). Was definitely glad to be done driving though.

Showed up to the post Young Life club happenings and chilled with all the leaders. Such a good group of people. Went back and chilled with my boy Jeff Rose and just crashed out.

Next day just consisted of a lot of chillin. Walking Downtown, Thrift Shopping, Burritos, Beach, Naps... awesome.

I can see myself in Santa Cruz also. Beautiful place.

When I left it was raining in SC... which meant it was snowing in Tahoe... WAAACCCK!

All in all this trip was everything I needed it to be plus some. I felt refreshed and filled up.

Road Trippin Pt. 5: San Diego

So... I have this friend. His name is Eren Yarr.

I haven’t seen this guy for a very... very long time so I made it a point to get to SD on this road trip.

Showed up to the place he was house sitting and we just picked up where we left off.

Nothing but smiles and laughs all night!

His roommates came over to celebrate one of the guy’s birthdays. Pretty much a dance party all night.... good stuff.

Went to b-fast (crepes) and then church. Everyone we ran into was so warm and inviting. Pretty cool community at that church.

Then we grabbed lunch and sat at these cliffs... it was beautiful. Perfect day: chillin, good talk, good food, beautiful place... we were definitely caught in the moment and just enjoyed each other’s company.

His roommates were real dope too. They have a VERY good thing going on. Excellent group of young men rooted in the Lord and not fake about it at all. These dudes were the real deal.

Pretty much have never given SD a second thought before this. But now.... I would love to live here for a bit. Good people... beautiful weather. Wouldn’t mind bummin around there at all.

ALSO... one of my favorite breweries is here. Stone Brew... tasty for sure. Picked up a growler of Ruination IPA

Now a 9 hour drive to Santa Cruz!

Road Trippin Pt. 4: PHX

PHX! I freakin love this city.

Pretty decent food culture, great people.... it doesn’t snow. All the things that make any place enjoyable to live!

Drove directly to ‘The Farm at South Mountain’ for a dress rehearsal from Flagstaff (which I had to drive through some dirt roads due to a flipped cattle truck... interesting drive for sure). It was good to see familiar faces.

Joey and Brit’s wedding day was awesome! It was like a perfect storm of friends. Old and new interesting enough... there were definitely some surprises. Needless to say, we had a great time. Some of us... i little too great of a time... we all reveled in the moment.

It seems these days we are all on different paths. So getting all together at once was a rarity. Writing this now I’m just smiling at all the random things that happened, jokes, pranks, laughs, the people. It was good.

Spent the rest of my time home just catching up with people. Went to visit my old Young Life group (was thrown in a skit immediately), caught up with old friends, old YL kids (young men really... no longer kids... making me feel all old and stuff). It was interesting to have a peace about leaving PHX... knowing that I the Lord moves in my absence... it was huge for me.

And the food? Nana’s cooking? GOOD NIGHT! Her green chili... it’s over! Got my grub on... hard.

All in all the trip home exceeded my expectations. Although I miss this place to death, I know it isn’t where I need to be at the moment. Don’t know if that moment to move back will ever come again (I hope it does)... but I know the good Lord is keeping me put in Tahoe for a reason.

Off to SD!

Road Trippin Pt. 3: Flagstaff

I don’t have any pictures for Flag... I stole these ones from Facebook. But let me tell you... it was fun.

I rolled through Williams AZ to see some Lost Canyon fam. Tried to see all the guys... but to my surprise walked in to the LC women’s bible study. It was so fun to see them! They had nothing but love for me.

When I left the women I headed over to Kopicky’s house (LC Landscape Manager) to chill. Just shot the poop with him, Mrs. Kopicky, and Mike Cavalerie (LC Food Service Manager). Good guys right there.

I only spent one night in FLG. But it was extremely good for me to hang with good people.

The homies:

Mike Rudder (top middle): If you’ve met him... you know he’s ridiculous and always in GO mode. Dude is a great man and I’m blessed to have spent a summer with him working at Lost Canyon.

Danh Nguyen (the tanned asian): We’ve known each other for a few years now. Volunteered for a month together a few years back. Probably one of the nicest guys I’ve come across.

Chad Fields (tongue): Chad is an extremely nice guy. Super generous, funny... dude is energetic!

Nate Fisher: This guy is a solid dude. Super social. Put a board game on the table...he’s down to play! We put in work together for the past two summers. I respect this guy’s work ethic and his heart. Put us together to work... we’ll kill it. Also... I don’t think I know anyone that love Chipotle more than him.
nate-2011-05-14-23-45.jpg

Adam Castro: We used to do ministry together in west PHX for a bit. Everytime we get together... nothing but laughs.

Hanging with these men was EXACTLY what I needed. All we did was laugh at old stories and caught up on new adventures.

I can see myself here... BIG TIME!

On to PHX!

Road Trippin Pt. 2: Las Vegas

Posted by ohndray On 8:53 PM 0 comments
Right after my interview I headed out to Vegas... the drive took a very surprising turn when I stopped in some random little town to use the restroom.

That's when I met Edward. He introduced himself thusly, "You going to Vegas?"

Indeed I was!

Having his company made my drive exponentially better. We pretty much just shared our life stories, talked politics, philosophy, and whatever else came up.

This 18 year old young man grew up fast. Burglarizing houses, doing drugs (hard drugs... not the cool kind), and spent a good amount of time in jail.

Now a year clean, he decided to just hitch around the US.... living the dream! I want to do that so bad (and I hopefully will one day)... probably one of the most interesting individuals have ever come across.

Once we got in to Vegas, probably around 12:30 in the AM, we grabbed some Jack in the Box, then rolled down to the strip where I eventually dropped him off. Wish I had some pics of this kid... really hope he's safe.

THEN... it was off to kick it with my boy Ryan Guzman. We go back a bit and have kept in touch. He's recently transplanted from El Paso. A significant change in cities!  Not knocking EP though. I've had some good times in that city.

Not only is Vegas a convenient break in my drive to PHX, having a good friend to chill with makes it all the better.

For lunch, we went to this random spot my mom was telling me about. 8 dollar top sirloin dinner? 2 dollar microbrews (that weren't half bad)? Done... big time done! Ellis Island... go there for a cheap meal if you're in Vegas!

Went to Bill's Casino to watch BIG Elvis, but homie was off. We resorted to walking the strip a bit. Wasn't really feeling it... Vegas just felt so fake. The strip has this plastic feel to it... can't really explain it.

Another thing...

Freemont Street is AWESOME! This place at Mermaids Casino was so freakin rad... so bad for you though. Deep fried oreos, deep fried twinkies, chocolate covered banana, HUGE chili cheese dog.... I don't think I spent more than 8 bucks.

I also got my foodie fix.
http://slidinthru.com/
Excellent place. It actually surprised me how good this place was. Vegas doesn't really have a lot of culture... but places like this are changing things in LV.

Also got to chill with homegirl Monique Pichakzinczksiiii (spelling?). Her and one of her friends joined us at Slidin Thru.

It was cool to chill out with Ryan, talk about life, and share some laughs.  It was a great beginning to the road trip.

Next home.... PHX!

Road Trippin - Pt. 1: Tahoe

Posted by ohndray On 5:57 PM 0 comments
So... I just did one of the funnest experiences of my life!

From Tahoe to Vegas to Flagstaff to  PHX to San Diego to Santa Cruz and back to the Mountain Lodge.

I've decided to spread this out in to parts, starting with Tahoe.

The snow for March was crazy... STUPID in fact. It's definitely bad when people who have lived here for over a decade are awestruck and sick of the snow themselves. Lucky for me I've never lived in snow and have no other experiences to compare it to.

It's been a very interesting in Tahoe thus far. I love what I do and the people I have met have awesome.  The hardest part about my experience has been the isolation. I live about 20-30 minutes away from "town"... Truckee. Love that place, but if it's snowing, I'm not going anywhere.

I thought I would be able to handle being alone but did not expect it to be so intense. It is not a situation I would ever put myself in again.  I've kept in mind that the winter has been an abnormal one, but I have learned that I need community, need to be able to get out of the house.

On the other hand I have learned a heck of a lot about myself and a lot of priorities have changed for me.

Regardless, I've been looking forward to this road trip for about 3 months. First stop... Vegas!

How I prefer to waste time

Posted by ohndray On 3:18 PM 0 comments
... Or how I enjoy my time. That'd be more accurate.

I'm sitting in this dive restaurant called 'El Salvador Restaurant'. I have no idea if this place is good. It could easily turn in to a go to spot.

**UPDATE**
The pupusas at this place are pretty darn good.... and cheap... double whammy! I'll be back.

Back to the point of this blog...

It's fun trying new places to eat.

I absolutely love chillin in coffee shops (although not Starbucks... Too expensive and they make me feel tense). Get some reading done, do some writing, converse with people. Love it.

Used book stores? YUP! Catch me in the woodworking and DIY sections. Shoot... I'll walk around Home Depot thinking of things I want to build for hours.

Taking some photos? Yup! Although everyone and they moms is doing it, it's very enjoyable to me.

My favorite... Trying new beers. Go to a microbrewery and try something out of the norm. IPA's are my fave, so take note if you're a generous person. OR just come with me... Even if you don't like beer... Pepsi's on me.

Being creative or being social... I get re-energized big time by these things.

These things don't happen often enough living in the Sierra Nevadas.

Get Over It

Posted by ohndray On 3:18 PM 0 comments

So the other day I hit a pothole on the freeway and blew out 2 tires. Super suck! I was bummed big time. But... I got over it real quick.

Think about it.

When something happens like this... You have the option of dwelling on it, or moving forward.
Usually I'd be super pissed at something like this... Just spent about 200. But so what!

It's just money and I'm still breathing. I woke up this morning. I get to enjoy the rest of my life.

Something getting at you? Get over it. Why be angry, sad or worried? I feel if certain things are bothering you... You HAVE to ask yourself: Does this really matter?

It's freeing.

Go enjoy the life you're given.

p.s. All this goes out the window if something heavy is happening.

I try to go to church everyday

Posted by ohndray On 12:00 PM 1 comments
... And Mr. Oswald Chambers is my preacher man!

An excerpt from todays My Utmost:

"Never try to live your life with God in any other way than His way. And His way means absolute devotion to Him. Showing no concern for the uncertainties that lie ahead is the secret of walking with Jesus."

This got me so hyped!

Here I am, in what seems like constant anxiety over my near future for the past month, and good 'ol Oswald drops this on me!

If you've had a conversation with me lately, you'd know that I'm at a sort of crossroads in my life... But not that serious. I've been in DEEP contemplation between moving back home and staying here... But more complicated than that and it's been driving me crazy.

But I almost always come to realize that life is easy. Think about it. What do you REALLY have to worry about? Take the time to re-prioritize and worry about today. Because we don't really have much to say about what happens tomorrow besides what we want to do for lunch.

Snow...

Posted by ohndray On 4:45 PM 0 comments
Snow is only cool if you're within a 4 hour drive from it.

Living in it... That's a whole other story!

If you don't want to dig your car out twice a week (this isn't the deepest it's been by the way), don't want to dig out pathways to walk,
don't have the money for an all wheel drive vehicle, don't wan't to be stuck at home because the freeways are either closed or going slow due to people who don't know how to drive in snow... Stay where you are at.

It definitely takes a certain type of person to live anywhere it snows hard.

Being Blessed

Posted by ohndray On 12:35 AM 0 comments
So I've been somewhat bothered about the term "blessed" lately. I feel like the term is grossly misinterpreted. It's obnoxious that God is praised only when good (or what is perceived to be so) things are happening.

Who is God then when things are not going your way? What then do you have to say about the Creator? Are you then not "blessed"? Does God at that point cease to be good?

I have to be straightforward and admit this is also a personal struggle. There are plenty of things in my life I'm impatient about. Some of which I would feel "blessed" if I were to suddenly have such things. But I digress.

Are we not already sanctified? Are we not already holy children of God? What else can be done to bring us closer to God?

Just heard this Jim Rayburn quote, "...ain't nothing more that can be done about it!"

So then... I have complete confidence that we are CONTINUALLY blessed... Eternally even! It's just hard to realize it sometimes. We have to revel in that!

That's some exciting stuff right there. We are blessed... Always.

Job Hunting

Posted by ohndray On 3:49 PM 0 comments
Oh what it is to search for a job. It's the bane of many of my Facebook friends.

"Anyone know who's hiring!"

"I need a job!"

Is it really that hard to find work? I've never had the problem. I almost always have an "in". Why? It's not what you know...

I'm here in Truckee,CA. I enjoy visiting all the coffee shops, delis, etc. as much as I can (highly depends on what's in the bank).

I make it a point to get to know people. Two reasons (apart from me just being such a nice guy!):

REASON #1: You get WAY better service when people remember you (for good reasons). Even after a first visit, it's possible to achieve "hook-up" status; that's getting hooked up as in product... Not that other thing. Get your mind out of the gutter!

REASON #2: You never know when you might need something... Like a job! If you're memorable... You'll be thought of (redundant redundancy!)

So... I'm at the local Starbucks. Just had a great read outside.

It's a beautiful day. I'm looking for a second job. I'm gonna go shake some hands!

That's an excellent book by the way.

Trying to figure out the vid on this blogpress app

The Last Half of December...Christmas!

Posted by ohndray On 8:00 PM 0 comments
Been LACKING on this blog!

So a quick little something something...

In the vid:

The last Truckee YL club of the year, we had some people from Woodleaf and Lost Canyon come to this mountain bike maintenance clinic ran by Neil (Palo Alto Bicycle), chillin’ with the little brother, shopping for Menudo ingredients with my Nana, Christmas get together that Moor’s household, lost keys = trying to break in to a car, and Christmas with the fam!

Super quick little video... forgot to put in titles and what not... but... whatever... you get the jist... right?

Also... did a 5 minute photo shoot with the Hunters.

Ryan is the area director for Truckee, CA. They drove up to the lodge we popped this out real quick. Took about 80 snaps... the dogs were just running around everywhere!

That’s Uno on the left. He’s called Uno because he only has one eye... it makes sense. At this point the other dog’s name escapes me.IMG_6398-2011-01-7-19-00.JPG

Really cool couple.

Man... the time is FLYING by here. It seemed when I got here that Christmas was so far away... now it’s been about 2 weeks since the day.

I really hope you enjoyed your holidays.

The New Year

Posted by ohndray On 7:52 PM 2 comments
So I pretty much had my best New Year ever.

My friends Serena and Priscilla took a little road trip and were in San Francisco. I had nothing going on (even if I did... I’d probably go to the bay anyways)... SO New Years in SF was ON!

I had a great time.

The girls eventually made their way to the Mountain Lodge and we got to hang a lot. I also had the huge honor of listening to the sing... they’re pretty darn good.

YouTube Video

On a side note... my hair is getting long. I’m thinking of growing it stupid long again. It just might happen.
